Stroke occurs suddenly, with little or no warning. But if you know the signs and symptoms of stroke and get immediate treatment, a physician may be able to stop the stroke and even reverse its damaging effects. (See Signs and Symptoms of Stroke)

There's no time to spare if you suspect a stroke. Call emergency assistance immediately (911 in many areas) and get to a hospital. If a stroke is diagnosed within 3 hours of the start of symptoms, a physician may administer thrombolytic drugs to dissolve the blood clot. In many cases, this rapid treatment dramatically improves the chance of recovery.
